Local travel

Can't afford to get away? Or you only have one day instead of the week you wish you had?

Check out your local area for day trips. Some you may have heard about, but others may be new to you. Contact your state's travel bureau, and be sure to google your state (and others nearby if you are lucky enough to live near the state line) and look for travel information in the local area.

By staying within a hundred miles or so, you can save the expense of a hotel stay, keep the cost of fuel down (and that can be significant with the price of gas these days) and might even want to pack a picnic from home and save on meal costs.

And if all that savings adds up to a little extra spending money, you might be able to splurge a bit on attractions.

Don't forget locations that might be low-key, but could be fun anyway, depending upon your interests. Look for visiting exhibits at local universities or colleges, art museums, historic sites, national or state parks, local festivals, etc. Often these activities are fun and low-cost and, if you have children, can be very educational.

Remember that fun is what you make it ... if you set out with a positive attitude and are ready to enjoy yourself, you can have a GREAT time close to home!
