Visit Copenhagen

Denmark's history is long and rich, and the capital, Copenhagen, still boasts many cobblestone-paved streets amid buildings reminiscent of medieval days. Surrounded by canals and bodies of water, the picturesque city was founded in 1167 and retains it's charming atmosphere with old-world architecture. Clean air is the result of many cycle commuters, and Copenhagen and the surrounding countryside is a great destination for cyclists and backpackers. Within the city itself lies the world-famous Tivoli Gardens, magical with it's myriad twinkling lights, and packed with thrilling amusement rides. The area was home to Hans Christian Anderson, who penned a number of fairy tales including The Little Mermaid; today you can visit the mermaid's statue in Langelinie. If you plan to visit Copenhagen, don't miss these must-see attractions within the city: Christiansborg Slot (Castle), NY Carlsberg Glyptotek, Ordrupgaard, and Rosenborg Slot (Castle). There are dozens of other interesting places to visit as well, including Ripley's Believe It or Not, Tycho Brahe Planetarium, Louis Tussauds wax museum, Guinness World Records, Experimentarium, Zoologisk Museum, a zoo, and a number of theatres and other museums. A CPHCard is available for purchase, allowing holders free admission to over 50 Copenhagen attractions as well as discounts at dozens of others. Copenhagen weather is somewhat changeable ... snow can be expected between January and March, the rainy season is August through October, but during Copenhagen's summers, visitors can experience "white nights," or the time when the sun shines during most of the night, allowing many more hours of daylight for visiting the cities attractions and viewing the scenery. Danish cuisine boasts some of the world's finest pastries, so remember to sample some!

Travel Blog review

We like to periodically take a peek at what other travel bloggers are writing, and sometimes share the gems. We found a great travel blog at RealTravel which is exactly that ... contributions from real travelers on every destination, so you get to read firsthand what others had to say about each destination and their experiences there.

It was interesting to read about Annie King's experience in Antarctica, where she actually swam in the Antarctic Ocean, as well as enjoyed the hot water springs near the shore of the south polar continent with snow covering the ground.

We also enjoyed reading about Angus' and Karen's adventures in Japan, and learning about the culture there and participating in local festivals and traditions. Japan is very close to our hearts, and we love to hear other people's impressions and listen as they tell about what they enjoy about Japan.

Another favorite was the various "Top 10" lists ... including top 10 unforgettable experiences, top 10 tips for traveling with young children (these were very useful!), top 10 hidden American treasures, top 10 restaurants around the world, and the top 10 travel tips for South America, Asia, and others countries.

So spend some time checking out RealTravel ... and enjoy the trip!

Family Vacation - Australia

Australia is one of the most eclectic travel destinations, offering a wide variety of activities and attractions to suit any traveler. We want to focus on the family vacationing in Australia.

Sydney is home to the Taragona Zoo, the country's leading botanical garden, and houses a fine collection of animals from around the world in a unique setting: it is built along a ridge overlooking the water and offers breathtaking scenery at every turn. You may also enter the enclosure of many animals to be photographed with the animals, and bring home the souvenir of a lifetime. The Royal Botanic Gardens, offering free admission, are situated near the Sydney Opera House, which is a visual marvel in itself and is often cited as one of the wonders of the world today. Don't miss the Sydney aquarium, and there are a number of museums and art galleries to visit as well. Families can enjoy safe swimming at the Greenwich Baths. Smartvisit cards are available, offering free admission to the top area attractions.

Seeking a great deal on Sydney Hotels? Don't forget to check last-minute deals online. We found a hotel in Sydney from AUD 40 that is close to the water, offers free internet access and more. If you prefer more luxurious accommodations, we found a great deal at only AUD 139 for a 5-star hotel that is in actuality an apartment, including well-appointed bedroom, furnished lounge/dining room, a fully equipped laundry room, and special amenities such as fitness gym, sauna, spa, and swimming pool.

For families visiting Melbourne, check your calendars before planning your vacation. Melbourne is a cultural mecca, and hosts the International Arts Festival, a sculpture festival, other art festivals and fairs, a writers festival, numerous music festivals, and a host of multi-cultural festivals. Outside the city, your family can visit the penguins at Phillip Island Nature Park, view aboriginal art in the rocks of the Grampians, pan for gold and experience history in the recreated 1850's town in Sovereign Hill.

Melbourne Hotels are also available with deep discounts. We found hotels from AUD 59 offering game rooms for family fun, guest laundry, and the convenience of kitchenettes. For just slightly more, at AUD 69, we found the outstanding value of a 4-star accommodation with amenities including landscaped gardens and various recreational facilities such as fitness gym, sauna, swimming pool, as well as wireless internet access, restaurant, business facilities, with the added savings of free parking and no extra charge for children.

Nature-loving families visiting Brisbane may go on whale-watching excursions with Brisbane Whale Watching, visit (and hold) koalas at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, and view breathtaking scenery from the Mt. Cootha Lookout and Botanic Gardens. Those wishing to relax may visit the Gold Coast beaches. More adventurous families may wish to visit Rocksports Indoor Climbing Center and the Chermside Aquatic Centre. The Queensland Cultural Centre is home to the Queensland Museum, the Queensland Art Gallery and the Queensland State Library and Performing Arts Complex. Not far away are the Australia Zoo of Crocodile Hunter fame, Underwater World, and theme parks including Sea World, Movie World, Dreamworld, and Wet 'n Wild. The beaches of course offer water activities such as surfing, sailing, and scuba diving.

To find great deals on Brisbane Hotels, be sure to check the last-minute deals as well as year-round specials. The best price we found was AUD 65 for accommodations offering fridge and TV in each room, and guest laundry, kitchen, and BBQ facilities. The best deal, however, was an elegant 4-star accommodation from only AUD 79, offering sumptuous rooms, private balconies, kitchens, free movies, laundry, fitness gym, swimming pool, massage, direct internet access, secured covered parking, and much more.

Always look for extras offered in hotel pricing that make the price more of a bargain than it may at first appear, such as free parking, the ability to prepare at least some of your own meals or keep drinks cold, free meals, and children staying free. Last-minute online deals through a room broker can often save a lot of money over offers made directly with hotels, and offer a wide variety of accommodations. Also look for local savings cards that can often be purchased, allowing the holder to visit many local attractions for free, and sometimes with extra perks such as head-of-line privileges and additional discounts.

Happy traveling!

London travel and accommodations

London is one of the hottest travel destination for tourists of all kinds. Check out a list of the top ten attractions in London, including the Tower of London, the London Eye (shown at left), and a number of the world's premier museums. Also visit the list of the top ten musicals in London, which currently lists Disney's Lion King, The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Mary Poppins, and more. View info on London food and restaurants, or the best of shopping in London. And if you are traveling with kids, don't miss one of our favorites, Kids Love London.

Make all of your travel arrangements and reservations early. When searching for cheap hotels, it pays to search for discounts online, as you can often find quotes far below what you would receive from dealing directly with hotels. You also have the advantage of easily comparing all of the amenities offered by various hotels, and selecting the accommodations that best suit your needs and preferred level of comfort, as well as your budget.

Also consider searching available London apartments if it better suits your needs. Costs are generally higher, but the convenience of a fully appointed kitchen may offset the price if you prefer to cook some of your own meals. The best we found on the day we compared rates was the Citadines South Kensington Apart'Hotel London, which has quite a good reputation with travelers for being clean and tastefully decorated, having well appointed facilities, employing helpful staff, offering convenience of location, and for overall value.

At the other end of the spectrum are hostels, which generally are sparsely furnished and without many amenities, but offer a camaraderie among travelers and a flavor all their own at much lower prices. If you prefer a hostel, there are several to chose from. However, we were pleasantly surprised to find better hotels offered at a lower price than was available from hostels, so those would probably be a better choice for most travelers. The Custom House Hotel London is a 3-star accommodation that offers more amenities than the typical London hotel starting at a modest GBP 40. And for overall best value savings, we found the Ifor Evans Hall London, which while only being rated a 1-star hotel, has garner the praise of past visitors and offers excellent value at only GBP 22.

Destination Clubs - a new vacation option

Destination clubs are a new vacation option and are increasing in popularity, offering members opportunities to share the usage of a wide variety of luxurious vacation homes around the world instead of being locked in to a single destination. The advantages of being part of a destination club are many, including use of magnificent homes, generally provided with concierge service, local facilities, often pantries stocked according to specification, and sometimes the services of a chef.

To read more about luxury destination clubs, contact Sherpareport for a free guide book, which will give more details about both destination clubs and private residence club options. The website is also very informative about all aspects of club ownership and purchase of fractional real estate.

Hawaii -- Still the Dream Vacation!

While there has been a lot of emphasis on unique destinations and vacation activities, it is with good reason that most people think of sandy beaches, waves rolling in, and tropical palm trees when the word "vacation" is mentioned. Hawaii -- with all of this and more -- is still the "definition" of vacation.

Whether you are interested in renting a vacation home in Hawaii, or purchasing real estate for year-round or seasonal use, try an online search for Honolulu real estate or Maui real estate before doing the routine hotel-room search. Renting a vacation home or condo offers advantages over hotel rooms, including a more comfortable, home-like atmosphere, greater privacy, the ability to cook your own meals and entertain, and accommodations for larger families or groups of friends.

Especially for those traveling in groups, the savings can be significant, and when you consider the additional savings of preparing at least some of your meals compared to restaurant meals, travelers can get a lot more for their vacation dollars by contacting a real estate agent.

Hawaii real estate agents also offer free listings of properties available for rental for those homeowners who wish to rent their properties, or owners of investment properties.
