Buying this place to turn it into a bed and breakfast was the biggest risk we’ve ever taken by far. My wife and I were so over living in the city and working those terrible hours so we decided to pick up everything and start all over in a quieter town and really do something with our lives we could be proud of. We found this amazing Victorian and that was that – we got to work looking into everything from building codes to Internet in Gearhart and here we are only about a month out from hosting our first guests at the bed and breakfast. I love saying I’m a innkeeper and I know my wife’s really excited about cooking for everyone every morning. I can’t believe we’ve carved out this insanely picturesque life for ourselves but we always did do anything we set our minds to so I can’t say I’m actually surprised. I hope business is good and that people respond well to what we’ve done with the place!

Long ago a young Charles Darwin boarded the HMS Beagle and visited the Galapagos Islands. The amazing diversity of animals he witnessed there inspired Darwin’s work on the Origin of Species. Travelers of today can recapture part of history on Galapagos Cruises, taking advantage of the opportunity to see fascinating wildlife.

A typical cruise itinerary will include the chance to see a number of species unique to the Galapagos Islands. Some of these include:

The Galapagos Land Iguana, described by Darwin as "ugly animals" having "a singularly stupid appearance" we prefer to think of them as reminiscent of dinosaurs. They are often seen in the company of birds they share a symbiotic relationship with. The birds remove ticks and other parasites from the iguanas, and get a free meal as payment for their services. The iguanas are about 3-5 feet long, and can live 50-60 years. They were so abundant in Darwin's time that he complained of not being able to find a place to pitch a tent among all the iguanas, but they later became almost extinct. Fortunately, there have been a number efforts to reintroduce them and rebuild their populations. Due to the success of these programs, visitors to the Galapagos Islands today can often see these creatures sunning themselves on the airstrips, crossing roads, or warming themselves on the rocks.

Visitors to the islands may see Galapagos Penguins, which are unique in several ways. They are the only wild penguins which ever cross the equator. At only 19 inches tall, they are among the smallest species of penguins. These two distinctions are in part responsible for another -- that they are also reported to be the rarest of penguins. The heat of the Islands does not make it the most hospitable home for penguins, and they struggle with keeping themselves cool and not letting eggs and chicks overheat. Their small size also makes them vulnerable to everything from native snakes and crabs to introduced cats on land, and seals, sea lions, and sharks in the water.

Galapagos sea lions are another favorite of travelers. They are very social and playful animals, and quite common on the islands. Visitors can often see them sun-bathing along the shoreline, frolicking in the surf, and barking amongst themselves. Their natural curiosity often draws them to be as interested in checking out the visitors as the visitors are in watching the sea lions. However, local laws protect wildlife from being disturbed, so they should not be interfered with. Still, it can be fun to have sea lions approach up close and personal, and they have earned their reputation as the official welcome wagon of the Galapagos Islands.

The Marine Iguana of the Galapagos Islands has the special distinction of being the only reptile in the world that has taken to the sea. Darwin obviously had no greater love for these than he did for the land iguanas, calling them "imps of darkness" and wrote that the beaches were covered with "disgusting clumsy Lizards ... as black as the porous rocks over which they crawl." In fact, the huge iguanas (up to 5-1/2 feet long) are clumsy on land, although they are poetry in motion when swimming. However, they are not always black, but vary in color by location (red, blue, and green tones depending on which island), sex (males are more colorful). Sometimes their faces look white, due to their ability to excrete salt through nasal glands. In order to eat, they dive into the water and use their teeth to scrape algae from the submerged rocks. During their time in the water, their bodies become cold and they must climb onto the rocks in order to warm up again. While their bodies are warming, they are unable to run away from attackers, so they may become aggressive and bite anything they view as threatening while they are cold. Although they are threatened by dogs, cats, and other introduced species, their population numbers are relatively strong.

Just as the Galapagos sea lions may form the welcome committee on land, the Waved Albatross may provide one by sea. Fortunate travelers may see their Galapagos Cruise Ship receive an escort by the waved albatross. These amazing birds with their almost 7-1/2 foot wingspans can remain at sea for long periods of time, and have a gland that removes salt from their bodies because they take in a lot of seawater. They are magnificent flyers, using the varying wind speeds over the sea to their advantage in order to glide for hours. On land, their courtship rituals are among some of the most involved and interesting, and the partners remain mated for life.

Of course, no Galapagos Cruise would be complete without the Galapagos Tortoise. Synonymous with the Galapagos Islands in the minds of travelers from all over the world with good reason, Spanish explorers called the Islands Galápago, which translates "tortoise. This all-around record-breaking animal is the largest tortoise, sometimes reaching weights around 900 pounds and over 6 feet in length. It also has one of the the longest lifespan of any vertebrate; one captive tortoise was known to live at least 170 years. In some places these tortoises travel in herds (bringing to mind my grandmother's expression "We're off like a herd of turtles!" meaning moving slowly). Although they normally eat 70-80 pounds of forage per day, they can survive as long as a year and a half with no food or water.

Of special interest are the tortoises' mutualistic relationship with local birds. Finches gather and dance before the tortoise, making their offer. The tortoise responds in agreement by stretching limbs and neck far out of his shell, allowing the small birds to enter and pick parasites off the tortoise, giving food to the birds and relief to the tortoise. But sometimes an unlucky bird may find himself the victim of a not-so-honorable tortoise. Tortoises have been seen to wait until a bird is beneath them, then suddenly drop their shell onto the bird, squashing it. The tortoise then backs up and eats the bird, making a meal of its helper.

Without a doubt, the Galapagos Islands is home to some of the most unique and varied species of animals the planet has to offer. This is one destination anyone with an interest in wildlife or natural history will want to include on their life-list of places to visit!

The Great Blue Hole, in Belize

The Great Blue Hole is actually an underwater sinkhole, off the coast of Belize. The atoll is the Lighthouse Reef.

Mount Roraima

The surface of Mount Roraima when surrounded by clouds looks like it's the only place remaining on earth. It is a tabletop mountain on the border of Venezuela, Brazil, and Guyana, only accessible from a steep slope from Venezuela, since the other sides are sheer cliffs. Spectacular waterfalls cascade from it's heights. Being isolated, there are some unique plant and animal species to be found on Mount Roraima.

Socotra

Socotra Island is another isolated location that boasts it's own collection of weird plant life and unique animals. It is one of a group of islands of the coast of Africa, but if you didn't know better, you might think you were on Mars instead from looking at the extremely weird landscape.

Giant's Causeway

Giant's Causeway in Ireland is a top destination for travelers to the Emerald Isle. The Causeway is made up of columns of basalt that interlock into an intricate pattern, and in some places rise high to form chimneys.

Lençóis Maranhenses

The Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is an oasis of sand dunes in Brazil. In spite of regular rainfall (it is not a desert) there are no plants. Surprising small lagoons fill the spaces between the dunes during the rainy season, reaching their peak between July and September. The lagoons are filled with fish (whose eggs are presumably brought in by birds from nearby bodies of water) and the inhabitants of the park fish the lagoons. Truly a visual contradiction - lagoons in the desert.

Wave Rock

Wave Rock near Hyden in Western Australia is a natural rock formation that resembles a huge ocean wave just about to break. As you can tell from the pictures here, it is a good site for some fun photography tricks.

Spotted Lake

Spotted Lake is found near Osoyoos in British Columbia, Canada. Great concentrations of various minerals as well as lesser amounts of silver and titanium combine to give the pools their intense coloration. When the water evaporates during the summer, the minerals remain and form the spots. The area was purchased by the First Nations in 2001 and set aside as a sacred and therapeutic site.

Tips for safe and healthy travel

Everyone wants to focus on the fun of a vacation, but a little advance planning of practical aspects can save a lot of fear and frustration (and maybe a life!) later, in case something goes wrong.

Not long ago I was traveling across the country with Pepper, my beloved pet Labrador. Pepper has been my close friend and traveling buddy since I got her as a puppy 3 years ago.

We were on a stretch of road in west Texas when Pepper started wheezing. She had never done anything like that before, and I was concerned. My concern turned to near-panic when her breathing became even more labored, and I could see she was in serious trouble. I pulled over to check on her, but she wasn’t choking on anything and I didn’t know how to help her. I grabbed my cell phone … no reception.

I had no idea what to do, but I knew out in the middle of nowhere I wasn’t going to be able to help her, so I got back on the road and rushed to I-didn’t-know-where. There was an exit coming up, and a little gas station there, so I pulled in. Thankfully, the attendant didn’t think I was crazy, started making phone calls for me, and put me in touch with a vet clinic that was less than 10 miles away.

I rushed Pepper there, and two men in white medical lab coats picked her up and carried her into the back. The story had a happy ending – it turns out Pepper was having an acute asthma attack, and while it WAS an emergency, they were able to stabilize her. Now I have medications to (hopefully!) keep it under control. Her attack was most likely triggered by something in the air that she hadn’t been exposed to before.

Of course, I'm so glad what could have been a tragedy turned out alright.

So, what can you do to protect your pets, your children, and even yourself when traveling in case of an emergency?

The National Institute of Health recommends the following precautions –

Check with your insurance company before traveling to find out what coverages you have. Make sure to bring insurance information with you, and consider traveler's insurance if needed

Make sure you have any medications you will need for the duration of your trip, and keep it with you in a carry-on rather than checking it
Try to research health care in the country you are visiting if you travel abroad, and if possible, know where you will go if you need help. (Often your hotel can be very helpful with this information)
Bring immunization and health records, and contact information for your physician(s) and pharmacist
Find out if you will need to update any immunizations 4-6 weeks before you travel
Know what precautions to take for the area you are visiting, such as whether any foods or liquids may be unsafe, prevention of mosquito bites, whether traveler's diarrhea is common at that destination and how to prevent/treat it
When you arrive at your destination, find out how to contact emergency services if it should become necessary

A first aid kit and sunscreen are sensible items to pack as well.

And for traveling safely with pets:

Bring proof of the pet's vaccinations, and contact information for your veterinarian
Pack enough of the pet's regular food so that they don't have to change during the trip, if it is a food that might not be available locally. It can be a good idea to bring jugs of water from home as well
Have a carrier for the pet and get them used to being inside it before they leave, so they have a safe haven to retreat to and you have a way to restrain them
Harnesses and leashes are a good idea for cats who might otherwise easily escape and run away in panic. Of course leashes are essential for dogs as well.
Never leave pets in a car when the weather is warm, as the temperatures can quickly become too much for them (and it may be illegal in some places as well)
Make sure to bring any medications the pet may need
A veterinary visit before traveling can be a wise precaution, since pets often hide early signs of illness until it becomes more serious

Rental cars - return clean OR ELSE! Five tips to avoid cleaning fees

Last time we talked about saving money by avoiding extra rental fees, but one particular area bears closer attention, and it can also save money on hotel and other property rentals. I’m talking about the cleaning fee that is usually written into every rental and lease agreement, and which can sometimes be quite high, and sometimes isn’t even justified.

I once rented a car to transport a handicapped man and his dog to a destination. I cleaned the car before it was turned in, but I missed a couple of dog hairs that had fallen to the carpet. I was then informed that I would be charged a $150 surcharge because they would be deep cleaning, deodorizing, and treating it for fleas. I was truly taken aback – this was not a luxury-type vehicle but a very utilitarian one, and the animal was very clean and well-cared for and certainly didn’t have fleas, but the manager insisted it was standard policy.

Not all companies are that particular, but the fact remains that for some of us, accidents DO happen, especially when traveling with pets or children. It pays to be prepared, and prevent any problems that have associated fees when turning in a rental car, checking out of a hotel room, or returning any other rented property.

1. Don’t smoke inside (or request a smoking rental). Even if you open a window or take other precautions, the smell of the smoke will get into fabrics, carpet, upholstery, etc. and may incur a hefty fee.

2. Be prepared. A simple container of baby wipes can clean small messes quickly and prevent them from setting.

3. Take along bags. A kitchen garbage bag, or even store shopping bags are useful to corral drink cups, soda cans, food wrappers, and protect carpet in the case of muddy shoes.

4. Use kid-safe containers. If your children are small, bring along drink cups and snack containers meant to minimize messy spills.

5. Be aware of pet issues. Keep your pet crated, if that is practical. If necessary, make sure you at least vacuum any loose hair. Your pet should be clean and odor-free, and of course should not harbor fleas.

And in the case of pet accidents, follow these car upholstery cleaning tips. Highly successful cleaning company The Steam Team (http://www.thesteamteam.com/austin-cleaning-services/) recommends cleaning up pet urine right away by blotting with white towels. Continue blotting until no more wetness can be felt. Next, prepare a solution of 2/3 water and 1/3 white vinegar to use on a fresh towel to clean the area. Afterwards, continue blotting to remove all moisture. They do not recommend using spot-cleaning solutions or detergents, but if you have a machine of your own, you can flush the area with plain water.

I hope these tips will help save our readers money, and keep their rentals cleaner and more comfortable, making travel that much more enjoyable.

Car rentals – don’t get taken in by these extra charges!

When deciding which rental company to use, most people call around and compare rates. However, the base rental rate isn’t the only factor that will determine how much you pay. Ask about extra fees which usually aren’t disclosed in rate quotes, and be especially aware of the following:

Added insurance fees – the common wisdom is “don’t buy it, it’s too expensive.” And that is usually true. Before you rent a vehicle, call your own auto insurer and check with them. Chances are if you have full coverage that your rental will also be covered. Be sure to ask about exactly what is covered and any exclusions though. For example, it may be that only certain drivers are covered. Your homeowner’s insurance may cover some losses as well, so you should give that agent a call. Another possible source of insurance coverage is your credit card company. Contact them in advance as well to see what kind of coverage comes with using their service, if any. (This could be a deciding factor of which card to use, if you have multiple cards.) Another consideration … if you have had at-fault accidents or other claims against your policy in the past few years, it might be better to bite the bullet and buy the policy offered by the car rental agency. That way you won’t have to turn in a report of any damages to your own insurer, which could drive your rates MUCH higher in a situation like this.

Mileage fees – be very aware of this one. Some rentals include unlimited mileage, but others charge a fee for every mile over a base rate, which quickly adds up. If you’ll be using the car often or driving some distance, you probably want to opt for unlimited mileage

Extra cleaning charges – Rental companies vary in what they will accept. Most won’t charge you even if you leave paper trash in the floorboard and the exterior looks like you’ve spent your vacation traveling dirt roads, but a few are more particular and will charge for anything other than “the condition in which you received” the vehicle. The safest bet is to keep it reasonably clean and, if necessary, give the car a once-over before taking it back. After you turn it in you may be stuck with the fee and then it’s too late.

Drop charges – some companies charge you to drop the car off at a place other than the exact location from which you rent it. These fees can vary quite a bit, so if you won’t be returning to the same location, ask in advance not only what the rental rate is, but how much it will cost to leave it at your destination. You may find the fee increases the price so much that it’s better to go with a company that charges a higher base rate.

Damage charges – make sure you carefully inspect the vehicle before you drive away, and insist that any damage at all be noted on the rental form as prior damage. Since most cell phones function as a camera, consider taking photos of any prior damage. Again as you drop the car off, take your own photos to prove it wasn’t damaged when you returned it, and ask to have it inspected right away if possible.

Optional equipment rental – often you pay a premium price for add-ons such as GPS or child safety seats. Sometimes these fees are high enough per day that you’d be better off buying a new one than paying rental charges for a week. If possible, bring your own instead. And if you truly need something, like a child safety seat, ask about guaranteed availability when you make the reservation. Often these cannot be reserved and may or may not be there when you arrive.

Fuel charges – this one has been causing quite a stir lately. Generally you are given the option of returning the car with a full tank, and not being charged for fuel. This is usually your best option, and you do want to be sure to fill up right before you drop off the vehicle. If you are short even a small amount, you can be charged more than twice going rates for fuel from the rental agency. Another item to hit travel news lately is a rental agency requiring receipts for fuel purchased IN ADDITION to the tank being full in order to avoid fuel fees. Be very careful of the fine print on this one.

I hope these tips will prove helpful with so many car rentals coming up over the next weeks, since so many people will be traveling to visit family. Be safe, be wise with your money, and have a good trip!

I’ve been working so hard over the last few months and I’m just feeling burnt out. I don’t know why in the world people push themselves as hard as I do but you know, at the end of the day you do what you’ve got to do in this economy to really make a mark on where you think you can go in life. My boss asked me to work extra hours and I’ve been doing it so you know, I feel like at this point I’m putting in my dues so I can reap the rewards later. I love that I can get home on the weekends and watch TV (I found a good direct tv dish network comparison when I moved) and just sleep all I want – that’s one of the benefits of being a SINGLE young professional since I don’t really have any responsibilities outside of my work. I don’t want it to be that way forever but I like it that way for now and it makes me feel settled – that’s what I’m going for!

Visitors to downtown can travel about the city unhampered by traffic in the world’s largest skywalk network, shopping and dining in the historic Stephen Avenue area or in one of two malls. Those interested in cultural events have many cinemas, galleries and museums to choose from, and can attend performances of various theatre troupes and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.

Sports enthusiasts need not be disappointed either. The Saddledome is home to the National Hockey League Calgary Flames, and in recent years several other hockey teams and a lacrosse team as well.

With all of this going for it, one of my favorite features of the city is that, even though it is one of the densest business districts in North America, residents of the many apartments in downtown Calgary are not locked into a concreted urban existence.

The Core Shopping Centre houses the Devonian Gardens on the upper level. The Devonian Gardens is an amazing 2.5 acre botanical park in the sky. Completely enclosed in glass, it is a tropical oasis even in the midst of Canadian winters, home to thousands of plants native to much warmer climes.

Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy the Olympic Plaza in downtown Calgary as well. The Olympic Plaza was the site of the medal ceremonies when Calgary hosted the 1988 Winter Olympics, and has since been the site of festivals, open-air concerts, and other outdoor events. In warmer weather, visitors enjoy the fountains and decorative pools. In winter the park serves as a public ice skating arena.

Indoors or out, culture, shopping or sports, Calgary has something to suit everyone.

Edmonton - The Festival City (and much more!)

Love festivals? Edmonton, Alberta is the city for you! While festival season is usually limited to a few months, Edmonton offers outstanding festivals throughout the year. To be in the center of the action at more affordable rates, rent Edmonton housing and stay and enjoy a palette of attractions.

Churchill Square is the site for a number of summer festivals. The Works Art and Design Festival takes place from late June to early July and features entries from award-winning national and international artists. Street performance takes center stage in July at the Edmonton International Street Performer’s Festival.

Other performance art events include the Edmonton International Fringe Festival, one of the largest in the world, and the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, which is a major festival in its own right. You can also attend the Free Will Shakespeare Festival or the Edmonton International Film Festival

Klondike Days is a huge summer festival themed after the gold rush and features fireworks, rides, live music, chuckwagon races, and much more. Another similarly themed event is the Canadian Final Rodeo and Farmfair, one of the most prestigious events of its kind in the world. In a similar vein is the Edmonton Heritage Festival.

Non-festival weekends offer plenty to see and do locally as well. One can visit the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra or enjoy a visit to one of many hosted professional sports games, since Edmonton is home to many professional sports teams including football, hockey, basketball, soccer, and lacrosse, along with several Indy events.

If shopping is your thing, visit West Edmonton Mall, which was the world’s largest mall until 2004. Fort Edmonton Park also boasts the title of Canada’s largest living history museum. So whether shopping, nightlife, cultural events, festivals, or sports appeal to you, you can find world-class outlets in Edmonton, Alberta.

Near the Santa Barbara County Courthouse is a whole day's fun, with variety to appeal to everyone.

Our walk through La Arcada and along State Street was sheer enjoyment. Many of the shops offer vintage pieces and offerings of eclectic artists. This was the place I found a hard time not spending ALL of my money (but I did have to buy a few things!). Charming and unexpected statues are dotted along the area, and I found a hidden-away courtyard with wonderful fountains. Interesting shop displays make it worthwhile just to stroll along the street. Many of the restaurants offer tempting treats, and it was hard to choose where to stop for refreshment! I'm also told that the consignment stores offer high fashion, often with the original price tags still attached, but I'm not a huge clothes hound, so I preferred exploring the artistic and decorative shops instead.

We arrived at the Museum of Art just as some event was about to start, and they kindly waived the fee for us. It was later in the afternoon, and there really wasn't sufficient time to study EVERYthing, but it was a very enjoyable few hours. Exhibits do change, so I won't go into that, but you can check with the Museum before you go to find out what exhibits will be there, and any special events as well. Their permanent collection is wonderful as well -- we particularly enjoyed the Asian collection and the Antiquities, presided over by a marble statue of Hermes.

All in all, it was a wonderful place to visit. Families could enjoy this area very much, but I think it is even better for couples or friends or even single tourists. Enjoy!

California trip - Things to do in Santa Barbara - Lotusland

If the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden didn't deliver the landscaped beauty and lush tropical flowering gardens you expected, Lotusland will fulfill those expectations and more.

The tour of the gardens once owned by Madame Ganna Walska showcases her diverse and spectacular collections of plants.The topiary garden contains dozens of huge animals formed from living shrubbery, and a boxwood maze. The cacti garden contains more than 300 types in sculptural forms nested among diorite boulders and basalt columns and formations. The Japanese garden is splendid in its form, interplay of color, and tranquility. The butterfly garden entices not only butterflies but many beneficial species and is a lesson in using insects to benefit the garden, rather than pesticides. The bromeliad garden is also home to ephphytes and some impressive trees, including huge ponytail palms. The cycad garden puts visitors in mind of walking into dinosaur territory, and is probably the most extensive collection in America. Altogether there are 17 different gardens to enjoy.

If you would like to visit, you will need reservations, as the tours and visitors are limited. But this experience is well worth the effort and expense for anyone who enjoys gardens, being outdoors, or beautiful spaces. Again, be sure to bring a camera. There will be plenty to see and photograph!

The Mission was definitely on our list of places to see. Steeped in history, and beautifully maintained and landscaped, you won't regret taking the time to enjoy your visit. If possible, you may want to bring along a picnic basket and enjoy a delightful meal surrounded by beauty on the front lawn.

Don't miss the lavenderia out front where the Indians used to do their laundry. Inside, you will be led along to view the courtyard, various rooms with interesting construction and architecture, and more. The chapel, which is gorgeous, is a somewhat somber experience, featuring inspiring works of art. The kitchen may be viewed through glass and demonstrates with historic accuracy the tasks and tools of the day. There are many interesting artifacts, all with detailed descriptions and explanations. It is sometimes difficult to see each item and read all of the information if the area is crowded, but worth the wait.

Rivaling the interior for beauty are the grounds. Don't miss the cemetery (where the girl from Island of the Blue Dolphin is buried, if you are familiar with that story). The statues are wonderful. And on the other side of the building, there are beautifully landscaped grounds with a walk-through Way of the Cross mosaic display.

You will DEFINITELY want a camera for this one, and members in your party should be ready to be photographed. The gardens and grounds lend many beautiful backdrops for photos of people. However, much of the artwork and artifacts are delicate, so flash photography will not be permitted inside. You will need a camera where you can turn off the flash, and you will want one that takes good pictures despite that. Otherwise, you can always pick up postcards in the gift shop to remind you of your trip.

The admission price was reasonable, and the visit was very enjoyable and educational. We can wholeheartedly recommend this for anyone interested in history, art, religion, or who loves beautiful gardens. It is an educational site for the whole family, and enjoyable for couples to stroll through together. Lone tourists can take advantage of opportunities to skirt the crowds and better see everything the Mission has to offer. We hope you enjoy your visit!

California trip - Things to do in Santa Barbara - Santa Barbara Courthouse

I had read about the Santa Barbara Courthouse, but honestly, I wasn't all that excited to be visiting a courthouse building. It just didn't sound all that exciting when compared with all the other destinations we had planned. Still, I decided to go along. And I can understand why people talk about it being such a great place to visit!

The building itself is gorgeous. It really looks like something out of a movie, and it's hard to believe it could look so perfect. I'm only mildly interested in architecture, but the style of the building and many, many details I found inside had me pausing to examine them more closely and snap photos just so I wouldn't forget. And that was just the lower halls and entryway! I completely forgot about architecture when I entered the mural room. It was really amazing to see history on parade in such vivid detail. I had to stand and study it for a while, then sit down and study it some more. When it was time to move on and go up to the tower -- all I can say is "Wow!" There was a bit of a breeze, and I could feel the power of it pushing against me, which was almost scary, standing at that height. But being able to survey the entire city and out into the distance took my mind of my mild fear of heights, and I went round and round the tower platform, enjoying the view from every angle. Before I knew it, it was time to go.

The Santa Barbara County Courthouse really is worth at least a few hours' stop on your trip. Try to catch one of the guided tours there, and you will learn so much more about the history and architecture, and appreciate it that much more. And DO take your camera to this one as well. Everywhere you turn there is some interesting little detail.

Another destination I wouldn't have wanted to miss was the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden. It's a beautiful natural area covering nearly 70 acres with walking trails, and some landscaped areas.

The name may be a bit misleading to some folks. I have visited botanic gardens all over, and most of them tend to be heavily landscaped and often everywhere you look seems to be a focal point of someone's flower garden. The Santa Barbara gardens aren't like that. They are more like a huge nature area, with walking trails, etc.

The park is dog-friendly, which you may count as a good thing, or a bad thing. I didn't have a dog with me, but I didn't mind.

I do enjoy the native plants of California, and so for me it was beautiful everywhere I looked. It was also nice to enjoy the coolness of walking along under the trees, since it was still blazing hot in my home state when I took this trip. They offer native plants at the shop there as well, which make nice keepsakes of the trip.

If you decide to go, be sure to wear comfortable shoes and take along a light jacket (even in summer) if you are going to be there through the afternoon. If you are like me, you will also want to bring a camera along. A bottle of water for the walk isn't a bad idea either.

California trip - Things to do in Santa Barbara - Stearn's Wharf

Since I love to browse around interesting little shops, Stearn's Wharf was on my list of things to do while on my California vacation. The dolphin sculpture at the head of the wharf greets visitors, and since it is a wharf, you must park nearby and walk on.

I enjoyed the walk down the boardwalk, watching sea birds dive into the water and swoop up fish. My companions and I carried on a lively conversation, anticipating what we might discover at the end of the long pier.

And we were not disappointed. We wove through a maze of little shops on one side that offered all sorts of touristy items (I had to have a Santa Barbara memento) and one shop had the cutest jewelry, all for very reasonable prices. The people were great too, I chatted at length with the lady who owned the jewelry shop while I selected a pair of earrings.

There are all sorts of walking-around food sold there. We enjoyed an ice cream cone (it seemed fitting, but as it was getting toward late afternoon, it was becoming too chilly to enjoy it for much later in the day!) and looked out at the sun lowering over the water. At the end of the day, and the end of the wharf, we found SB Shellfish Company, which offered lobster and other menu attractions in a very fitting seaside atmosphere.

I can't say that Stearn's Wharf was the highlight of my trip, but there were MANY wonderful places we visited. I will say that it is definitely worth stopping by for an afternoon, and I wouldn't have wanted to miss it.

Chase Away Wintertime Blues - Indoor Water Parks!

“Niagara Falls” naturally brings to mind the majestic falls, some of the most powerful in the world, the site of many a honeymoon, and where you can be soaked from spray hundreds of feet from the falls themselves.

What Ontario in winter is NOT likely to inspire are thoughts of waterslides and swimming, or floating lazily along on your own innertube. But that’s just what you can find at Wolf Lodge, one of a chain of indoor water parks.

San Diego Zoo

I'd waiting my entire life to go to the San Diego Zoo, and finally made it. It completely fulfilled my expectations. There are enough exhibits there to easily fill a day -- in fact I didn't have enough time to see everything I had wanted to see.

I spent more time that I would have expected in the huge walk-through aviaries where a rainbow of birds flashed all around. It was most enjoyable to wait for the times when no one else was there, and the birds really exploded into action while I made myself like a statue and watched them. I very nearly got buzzed several times!

Polar bears were another favorite exhibit. With the above and below water viewing areas, visitors can watch them dive, and swim up to the glass. The hippo was visible above and below water as well, and swam back and forth in a loop along the glass wall, giving a good view. Near the hippo area was a nursery with baby cheetahs tumbling and wrestling. It was hard to believe something so cute would grow to be such an incredibly fast hunter one day.

The giant pandas were of course a must-see attraction. This one had a line, but I noticed it was shorter near lunch time and waited through it then. Conversations with other visitors and drawings of panda families on the fence panels by local children helped the time pass. Since there were more people waiting to see the pandas, I wasn't surprised that visitors had to keep moving and not hold everyone up as they passed on the walkway beneath the slow-moving creatures. But I was delighted to find that you could move to the second tier and watch from there as long as you liked, since most people were satisfied to walk through and take a long glance, then move on. If only I could have delayed my visit for a while -- a baby panda had been born not long ago, but it was still too small to be outside and could only be seen on the panda cam online.

As dusk was falling, I received another great thrill. The male lion let loose with his deep rumbling series of grunts that led up to a chorus of roars, continuing for some time. I've always loved that "song" but to hear it from a few feet away (and capture it on video!) was exhilarating.

I had very high expectations for the San Diego Zoo, having built it up in my mind since I was a child. I am glad to say, the experience did not disappoint!

Lanzarote - Island Of Fire

Lanzarote lies just 62 miles off the coast of Saharan Africa and this speck of Spain is the most easterly of the Canary Islands. This location – on the same line of latitude as parts of Florida and Mexico - creates an enviable year round climate that is characterised by extremely low rainfall (on average of just six days per year) and temperatures that rarely fall below 20c – even in the winter months.

As a result, the island is a popular holiday destination all year round, attracting over one million visitors from the UK and Ireland in 2007. Drawn to Lanzarote´s ninety plus beaches – the vast majority of which boast fine golden sand.

Philosophers once speculated that the island was a remnant of the lost continent of Atlantis. In pre-Spanish times Phoenician Traders dubbed it the Purple Island – as a lichen called Orchilla that was used to make purple dye was once grown here in abundance. And during the Middle Ages Lanzarote was often referred to as one of the Fortunate Islands – due to this clement climate.

Today, Lanzarote is best known as the Island of Fire, as a result of the worlds longest ever volcanic eruption - lasting six years from 1730. Which covered around one third of the island in a layer of lava that today gives parts of Lanzarote the almost primeval appearance of a land that has just been formed – and is often likened to the surface of the moon.

For such a small island Lanzarote is big on attractions. Offering visitors much more than just beautiful beaches and volcanic vistas alone. Thanks in no small part to the efforts of the island born artist and architect Cesar Manrique. Who not only fought to save Lanzarote from the sort of over development that has blighted other sunspots. But who also created some of the most unique tourist attractions imaginable – such as the Jameos Del Agua and the Mirador Del Rio.

As a result Lanzarote was declared a UNESCO protected biosphere in 1994. The first island in the world to enjoy such status.

Lanzarote also boasts enormous natural beauty and great contrasts in scenery. From the arid lava fields of the Timanfaya National Park in the South, through to the green and verdant Valley of 1,000 Palms in the North. And as the island is so manageably small it is easy to hire a car and discover Lanzarote´s many delights.

Nature in New Zealand

New Zealand is the perfect destination for adventurous, nature-loving travelers. While Aukland is a huge cosmopolitan city offering cultural museums, diverse shopping, pampering spas, and much more, it also holds treasures for those who are inspired by nature. The Brick Bay Sculpture trail is the perfect marrying of culture in natural surroundings, Butterfly Creek houses 700 free-flying butterflies and walk-through aviary and aquaria exhibits, the Aukland Zoo offers up-close experiences with a wide variety of animals, and some of the world's best gardens are open to the public. Within minutes of most Aukland hotels are breathtaking beaches, serene islands, and majestic natural scenery.

The capital city of Wellington offers balloon rides over the picturesque countryside, canoing or kayaking along local streams, or rock climbing and other extreme outdoor activities at the Makahika Outdoor Pursuit Centre. Many park trails, walkways, public gardens, and shoreline walks are accessible to Wellington hotels. Enjoy mountain biking or hiking in the nearby mountains and wild areas.

Spring at Bellingrath Gardens

One of my favorite travel destinations is located in South Alabama, just outside Mobile. Bellingrath Gardens is close enough for my family to visit on a fairly regular basis, and the spring is normally our favorite time of year there. The 905 acre estate boasts over 250,000 azaleas, hydrangeas, fuschias, Easter lilies, and much more.

Begun as a fishing camp by Mr. Bellingrath, the available acres appealed to Mrs. Bellingrath and she began planting azaleas, camellias, and other southern favorites on the property in the early 1900's. It was in the spring of 1932 that the couple opened the grounds to the public for an afternoon, and they were overwhelmed by the response. In 1934 they opened the lovely grounds to ongoing public visitation.

Changing with the seasons, Bellingrath has been likened to "a beautiful woman with a different dress for every week of the year." Summer roses draw crowds, fall color is led by chrysanthemums, the holidays feature loads of poinsettias, winter is the time of camellia blossoms. But the spring stars are the azaleas that form walls of lovely pink flowers bordering the long winding paths that work along the lovely estate, the perfect backdrop for photos and breathtaking up close or from a distance. Shown here are the Azalea Trail Maids, southern belles in traditional gowns that stroll the estate among the lush azalea plantings. Another wonderful spring feature is the Japanese garden with its graceful wisteria.

Unfortunately, this year is not ideal for azaleas. The flowers are lovely, but will not be lasting as long as they normally do, so the window of opportunity is very limited. However, Bellingrath is still worth visiting at any time of year, and even if you miss the azaleas this year, you should place Bellingrath on your calendar for next spring, and consider visiting the see the many thousands of other lovely flowers in bloom. Generally, the azaleas start to bloom in late February and are at their peak during March.

Admission prices range from $5.50 to $26, depending upon the age of the visitor and whether you wish to view the gardens only or to also tour the home and/or ride the riverboat cruise.

So lovely, the Gardens have been the subject of many works of art. You can visit a collection by Richard Earl Thompson featuring Bellingrath Gardens listed at secondnatured.com (which by the way, supports nonprofit environmental organizations and helps to preserve natural beauty with the income from purchases made from downloaded art). Fairhope Alabama Arts Festival

Spring in the South is one of the most beautiful times of year, with blooming azaleas and grasses greening far earlier than in northern climes. For more than half a century, the folks in Fairhope, Alabama have enjoyed the beautiful weather at their own arts and crafts event every year, the Annual Arts and Crafts Festival.

This year's 56th Annual Arts and Crafts Festival will feature almost 250 exhibitors from all over the US at the juried show. Live entertainment is on the bill, and all the usual festival foods are available to enjoy as you stroll along the wide aisles and enjoy oooooo-ing and ahhhh-ing over stunning and unique works of art. Among the many awards given to the annual event are the inclusion in top 20 events in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society.

Because the event attracts so many visitors, it can be difficult to park nearby. But free parking is available in many locations, and there is a shuttle service provided to the grounds for only $1.

If you're planning to visit from outside the area, you might want to enjoy the local beaches during your stay. There are also a number of nice State Parks as well.

Family Broadway Shows

Some of the longest-running Broadway shows of all times have been wonderful family events. Enjoying live shows as they grow up helps children develop a wider appreciation of the arts, and is an important aspect of the cultural education of youngsters whenever it is possible to include such events. While tickets can be expensive as a family affair, consider purchasing Broadway Tickets online, which can result in substantial savings.

Some of the best shows for families include Mary Poppins, Wicked, and The Little Mermaid, and Lion King.

Most of our destination posts focus on international cities, such as Amsterdam, Paris, London, Rome, Tokyo, and others, but we want to feature something a little closer to (our!) home this time.

New York City is a world unto itself, with dining that features cuisine from all over the world, ranging from street vendors to chic and exclusive restaurants that require months-ahead reservations (and probably that much time to save in order to pay the bill!). Diversity of cultures is seen as nowhere else in the world. Even the city holidays reflect the variety of peoples living in New York, from the Hindu Festival of Lights to the parades representing diverse ethnicities including Irish, Puerto Rican, Chinese, West Indian, and more.

Poipu Beach in Kauai, Hawaii

The dreary cold rain that has been drenching our area for weeks has me dreaming of warmer climes, and what better place to turn one's attention during this gloomy time of year than sun-drenched, bright, and tropical Hawaii ... the exact opposite of what we're experiencing here!

We decided to do a little virtual travel for your benefit and ours, and ended up on the resort beach of Poipu in Kauai, Hawaii. One of the reasons we were drawn to this location in our surfing is the variety of beaches available on the island. Poipu Beach was recently listed as the #1 beach in the United States, but it actually includes a number of beaches. Secluded coves offer protection from the wildest surf and give beginners (that would be me!) a perfect place to learn to surf, or to learn to snorkel. Speaking of snorkeling, or diving in general, Nukumoi Point is the reef home of an entrancing collection of tropical fish. Snorkelers and divers can visit face-to-face with angelfish, striped damselfish, butterfly fish, tangs, Moorish idols, and more as well as sea turtles.

You can find even more nature adventure in Poipu. Shipwreck Beach is set apart from the rest of the island by a rocky coastline that is criss-crossed with nature trails. Walking along the cliffs at dawn is the experience of a lifetime. Past Shipwreck Beach you can find Mahaulepu Beach, a pristine beach perfect for enjoying nature as you explore tidepools and their inhabitants amid the wild and windswept beauty. Mahaulepu IS wild, and not generally safe for swimming with its crashing surf, but a perfect place to enjoy nature, secluded and seemingly forgotten.

Another great feature of the island is Spouting Horn, a lava tube that spews salt water up to 50 feet into the sky. Be sure to visit at sunset, when the setting rays reflect off the water to create an iridescent rainbow of wonder. This is a fantastic opportunity for photographers.

I always like to check on the realities of travel to an area, and often I am pleasantly surprised at the costs for accommodations, attraction tickets, and other necessities. Sometimes I discover dream hotels, amazing rental homes, or even castles that are as much fun to read about as the destination. This time, I found both when I searched for Poipu vacation rentals.

When I looked for Poipu Condos, I was pleasantly surprised to find units available from only $105 per night at the Waikomo Stream Villas. Not expecting much for that price, I followed the link and was surprised to find that the unit mentioned had over 1,000 square feet of tastefully decorated, sun-lit and clean interior space with a fully equipped kitchen and even a nice outdoor area furnished for outdoor relaxing and entertaining. The TV is not huge but hey, you're in Hawaii, so why are you worried about television?

Curious, I decided to check the other end of the spectrum. Where could I stay if money was no object? My choice wasn't the most expensive place available, but rather only about 1/3 the cost of the highest-priced Poipu home rentals listed. I would chose the Sunset Makai Hale for its amazingly-textured and detailed interior, including lava-rock columns and luxuriously crafted wood. Many of the walls are floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, so you can open them and BE in a tropical oasis just off the beach, listening to the waves rolling in. I even loved the driveway! A shaded pool runs the length of the lanai, and lush, tropical plants encompass the estate, adding to the feel of being tucked away in a tropical oasis. THIS must be Hawaii living at its very finest.

Now I'm ready to pack my bags and go!

Unique (and Romantic) France vacations!

We wanted to feature something a little different this time for our romantic Valentine's Day series. For a new twist on romance, we are heading to the Aquitaine area of France.

Our first suggestion is to rent an apartment and relax in medieval Agen. Just as you'd expect from a medieval region in France, couples can explore castles from the Renaissance or visit secluded monasteries as well as enjoy the breathtaking historic architecture, such as the Cathedral de St. Caprais or tour art galleries and museums.

However, we would like to spotlight the Fontirou Caves, found in the Lot Valley. Dramatic stalactites and stalagmites glitter in this maze of subterranean grottoes and caverns, punctuated by draperies, curtains, and columns of limestone throughout the seven chambers that make up the cave system. This surreal underground landscape has yielded various prehistoric articles, including the fang of a sabre-toothed tiger. After strolling through the dreamlike (and if you want to hold your beloved close to you, spooky!) caverns, couples can emerge into the sunlight to visit a charming mini-golf course in a woodland setting.

If you want to add extra spice to your Agen visit, go during September for the Foire d’Agen. You'll have to deal with crowds, but the fair includes many thrilling rides, interesting exhibits, animal shows, concerts, and other entertainment.

Another unique option for intrepid couples is the opportunity to hike the French Pyrenees from a gite in Pyrénées-Atlantique. Italy's charming old-world architecture and history, world-famous artistic offerings, sunny seaside beaches, sprawling vineyards, delicious food and romantic music all combine to produce a wonderfully alluring atmosphere. Rome is home to the Vatican (principal of the Roman Catholic Church). Remnants of the Etruscan civilization can be visited at Cerveteri, Vulci, Veio, and Tarquinia. Venice, a jewel among Italian cities, offers not only the Guggenheim, but many other outstanding museums as well, including the Academy Galleries, the G. Franchetti Gallery, and quite a few others. In the surrounding area, Byzantine architecture is displayed at St. Mark and the Cathedral of Torcello. Travelers should take time to visit the local islands, including Murano, Burano, and Torcello. The scenery of the Dolomites should not be missed. But ... Venice is a city that always evokes mental images of the canals with the canal boats traveling slowly along. A visit to the city would not be complete without enjoying this famous treat.

Germany continues to be one of the finest travel destinations we can recommend, for a number of reasons. Walking down the quiet cobbled roads of quaint villages make you feel as though you just stepped into a Brothers Grimm fairy tale (less the evil witch!). The deep, dark forests - such as the famous Black Forest - bring to mind more exciting tales. Fairy tale castles are fun to visit as well ... the countryside makes a wonderful backdrop for family travel photos that could be set to a medieval or fairy-tale theme in your scrapbooks. As for me personally, I love German Shepherd dogs and would be thrilled to visit kennels housing some of the most outstanding dogs in the world. Germany and Austria are also home to a number of large cities that offer a full range of activities of modern interest as well. Some destinations to consider include Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, and Vienna. Berlin boasts the Bradenburg Gate, the fascinating architecture of the dome of the Reichstag, and a treasure trove of museums, among other attractions. Munich offers some of the most charming and dream-like architecture ranging from minarets to castles fit for any princess, as well as a number of museums with focuses ranging from beer to art to to paleontology to festivals to BMWs. Frankfurt is home to more modern architecture but no less a museum mecca with world-famous dinosaur and natural history exhibits, Jewish and Bible museums, museums dedicated to money, art, history, architecture, and even one dedicated to letting visitors experience the world through senses without seeing. Vienna boasts Belvedere Palace, the Burgtheater (National Theatre), the Karlskirche cathedral, and the Hofburg, which was built as a magnificent castle. View the city from above in the Danube Tower, enjoy thrilling rides at the Prater Fun Fair, visit the Schönbrunn Zoo, shop Naschmarkt. While we are enjoying the break between home schooling semesters, we want to feature some interesting cultural destinations around the world. For both those travelers fortunate enough to be able to visit their destinations as well as for those who travel the world through vacation sites and photos, we would like to suggest some interesting holidays that can bring rich cultural diversity and learning to your family.

Goa holidays are one of the first places we would like to suggest. Travelers can still expect to see women dressed in saris, following age-old traditions. The Wednesday Flea Market at Ajuna is a good place to peruse a huge variety of unique handcrafted goods and jewelry. The wildlife of India is spectacular, and highly diverse. And while the expected fish, curry, and rice do make up staples of the Goan cuisine, there are many more exotic tastes and spices to enjoy. This "Pearl of the Orient" -- also known as the "Rome of the East" is a great place to explore culture and geography.

Located between Europe and Asia, and distinct from both, holidays in Turkey promise an exotic locale with a flavor completely its own. The metropolis of Istanbul, named the 2010 Capital of Culture for Europe, actually occupies two different continents. The Agean is home to two of the seven wonders of the Ancient World, while the beautiful beaches of the Mediterranean coast offer the Aspendos Theatre. The East and Southeast regions include some outstanding examples of Turkish architecture, as well as Mount Ararat, the supposed resting place of Noah's Ark. The Black Sea region has majestic mountain peaks surrounded by forest. Overall, Turkey is one of the most culturally diverse places we have featured.

Beaches of course are available throughout most of Florida, and the native population of alligators could prove interesting. There are many tourist attrations in Orlando, especially. But for cultural study, it is worth it to make a quick trip to the Holy Land Experience, and then look into Epcot at Walt Disney World. The back portion of Epcot is divided into eleven "countries." In each area, the architecture is patterned after the traditional architecture from the featured country, the plants in that section are native to that country, as are the people who staff the area. (Many are international students.) There are also shops that offer wares from and associated with the country, and foods in the area are usually representative of those from that country as well. Often entertainment from that country is featured as well. So with an afternoon trip to Epcot, it is possible to visit Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Italy, the United States, Japan, Morroco, France, the UK, and Canada.

Tenerife Island, the largest of the Canary Islands, has an interesting story behind its unique geography. It is believed that the island was once three separate islands that were melded together into a single large island by a prehistoric volcanic eruption. However the island was formed, it is divided into two very distinct sections: a drier southern section that is the perfect sunny location for beachside resorts, and a very verdant northern section that offers beautiful and wild mountain scenery populated with exotic animals and plant life. Paros, one of the Cyclades islands, has a rich history and is home to charming villages and features many pleasant sandy beaches. Huge rocks have eroded into sculptural shapes that appear to be seated in the sand in Kolibithres. Thousands of lovely butterflies flit amidst the thick foliage of Petaloudes during the summer months. Vinyards, citrus and olive groves adorn terraces near Lefkes. Of the many beaches, some are full of other beach-goers if you are seeking company, while others are secluded. The high winds make the local beaches a perfect spot for both wind surfing and kite surfing.

In our quest to bring you some of the best travel sites, we visit a lot of websites offering vacation rentals, but rarely have we enjoyed visiting a rental booking site as much as we have enjoyed this one. It would take months to fully review everything that is offered, because there are so many destinations offered, and each one we checked had a long listing of rentals. These are not your typical variety of hotels, either, but for the most part are apartments, homes, and even outright mansions available in virtually any place you might choose to visit.

Our usual method of review is to seek outstanding value-for-cost rentals, and give you the details on those particular properties within our post so that you will have a baseline to compare properties you may be considering. However, we immediately were so impressed at our visit to the page featuring Costa Rica vacation rentals that we decided to throw caution to the wind and enjoy looking for the most fabulous accommodations we could find. And find them we did ... the Casa Maravilla in Costa Rica is an incredible combination of sumptuousness and natural beauty, a true tropical paradise. The main house opens almost directly onto a large sparkling waterfall infinity pool. At sunset, the brilliant hues reflect off the ocean behind the pool, making poolside diners feel as if they are enjoying an elegant dinner on the beach. An open-style master bedroom overlooks the ocean, making you feel as if you are waking up on the beach (in air-conditioned comfort, of course!). The interior design is stunning, while outdoors lush tropical foliage soothes the senses. Lighted nightime paths throughout the property offer entrancing nocturnal adventures. A large open rancho for entertaining features dining tables, seating, a bar, and more. Not only is there a large main house, but also a more private, secluded guest house with full amenities that sleeps up to five. Overall this property is absolutely spectacular, and it is no wonder that celebrities and top executives have chosen this estate as their home away from home in Costa Rica.

We decided to view properties available in a very different destination as well, so next went to Paris vacation rentals, where we found quite spacious accommodations even in this chic city. It was difficult to select a favorite among the many choices, but we finally chose a St-Louis mansion for its unique flavor. We were enchanted with the juxtaposition of exposed beam ceilings and a crystal chandelier in one of the living areas, which is furnished in a charming French style and features a fireplace. We loved the leaded glass, the hanging copper pans, the marble countertops, and the stylish fixtures of the well-appointed kitchen. The bathrooms were lovely, with more marble and lots of mirrors, and one of the bedrooms echoed the exposed beam/crystal chandelier combination as well as the leaded glass from the kitchen. Our favorite feature were the arched stone ceilings shown in one of the bedrooms and another living area. It had an enchanting cave-transformed-to-castle feel to us, and was a unique and unexpected feature.

I have to say that this rental site is one of the most enjoyable, as well as informative, that we have had the pleasure of visiting in some time. Full descriptions of the amenities of each property are listed, as well as useful information concerning nearby attractions, restaurants, and other places of potential interest to guests. Rate schedules by season are provided. Some properties have links listed at the bottom of the page with extensive personal reviews by previous travelers of the particular property, as well. This vacation rental site is definitely worth a visit if you are planning your vacation or business travels.

Lausanne, touted as an ornamental jewel in a country crowned with beauty, has much to offer travelers, no matter their specific interests. Those fortunate enough to visit Lausanne will find a picturesque city offering glimpses of sunlight sparkling on the water and purple and grey peaks of the snow-covered Savoy Alps.

The city's generous support of the arts over the years has produced a range of festivals, opera, theatre, dance, and other cultural offerings that would rival a city ten times her size. Music lovers should attend performances of Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne and the Ensemble Vocal de Lausanne. A world-famous dance competition, the Prix de Lausanne, is held each January. July offers the eight-day-long Festival de la Cité. These are supplemented by a number of film festivals and music festivals, including the Bach festival. The Béjart Ballet also makes its home in Lausanne. The city also boasts dozens of museums of every type. Visitors should plan to visit the unorthodox Collection de l'Art Brut, and the Palais de Rumine, which houses five separate museums.

Another distinction of this fine city is that it has been the headquarters of the Olympic Committee since 1915, and is home to a wide variety of world governing bodies of many types of sports. The Olympic Museum is a related attraction. Visitors can also enjoy some of the best skiing the world has to offer on the slopes near Lausanne. Other offerings include an indoor skate park, a pool park, ice skating, and the Grand Vennes Sport Centre.

November in particular is a good month to visit Lausanne. The Festival Bach continues from November 3rd through the 28th. For the first time this year, world-renowned musicians have been invited to perform interpretations of Dieterich Buxtehude's work. The Metropop Festival, which has been called "The most hip and happening contemporary music festival of the autumn," is scheduled for November 8-10. Twenty concerts will be performed during the festival. The cultural Japanese Festival will be held November 10-11. This free festival will feature an array of traditional Japanese forms of art including flower arranging, collage, calligraphy, and more.

Vacation Points Clubs

A vacation points club allows travelers to pre-purchase "points" that can be applied to annual vacations. These points sometimes represent real interest in a real estate property, or else are often linked to a "home" resort that will be your primary vacation destination. Points are generally purchased for a set amount, and then assessed an annual fee per point during the period of ownership. Usually, the number of points required will vary, depending on how many people are expected to be in your group, the season in which you usually wish to travel, the quality of accommodations you prefer, and other factors. Sometimes there are other ways to save points (and thus money) depending on the particular program. Buena Vista Exeter, for example, allows you to use only half the normally required points if you book your hotel within 30 days of your intended arrival, resulting in a substantial savings -- or even two vacations a year for the price of one!

Other factors to look for - membership in a larger body. If the club belongs to RCI, which is an exchange company, you have even more options, often being able to exchange your points for your home resort for an opportunity to stay at any resort within the RCI network. This will dramatically increase your list of possible vacation destinations if you wish to travel to a different location each year.

Another benefit with some clubs are discounts on a variety of vacation-related services. These can include auto rental, airline flights, travel insurance, and similar services.

Rollover points (or the option to borrow from next year's points) also provide the best value and allow you to keep the maximum benefit of your purchased points even if unforeseen circumstances affect your ability to travel at a particular time. If you had planned your vacation during the last month of the year, you wouldn't want to lose that year's vacation altogether (even though it was already paid for) simply because a change of plans caused you to have to put your vacation off until January.

Also, if you are interested in flexibility from year to year, make sure the program you are considering offers this option, as some are restricted to a single resort.

A service every traveler should take advantage of before reserving their rooms are the wide variety of hotel booking services available. Services usually offer discounted rooms at a lower rate than the hotel's specials and discounts. Sometimes the savings can be significant.

The formats of these sites, and consequently their usefulness, varies. One we especially appreciated was easytobook.com. When searching for Amsterdam hotels, for example, the landing page shows several featured specials which represent especially good values, along with photos of the featured hotels, the star rating, a review rating, and a short intro about the hotel. A number of other particularly good values are featured as well. What we especially liked was the detailed information on the city of Amsterdam itself, discussing all aspects of various locations candidly, and helping the traveler to find what they are looking for (and bypass what they might wish to avoid).

From there it is an easy matter to select a particular level of hotel, from 1-star to 5-star, and view hundreds of hotels that suit your choice. Clicking any one of these will bring up detailed information on the hotel itself, in some cases giving very detailed descriptions of particular rooms when they vary within the same establishment (especially common for Bed & Breakfast accommodations). All of the necessary information concerning amenities, dining, check in and out times, child policy, parking, and more are listed as well. A separate tab gives access to a number of additional photos, or a map of the area. You can also find a number of customer reviews and ratings for most hotels. The distance to a number of nearby attractions, landmarks, business concerns, restaurants, shopping, and transportation centers is also provided for each hotel. We were quite impressed at the thoroughness of the reviews we viewed.

One of the best features of a destination such as the Alps is that the snow is virtually guaranteed for winter visitors. Arts Festival - Pensacola Forida, USA

If you are anywhere near the Pensacola, Florida area on the first weekend in November, the Greater Gulf Coast Arts Festival is definitely worth a visit. This year the weather is perfect, sunny and not too hot (some years it has actually been too cold!) and the Festival features a wide variety of arts, performers, food, and more.

We visited the Festival on Friday morning and afternoon. In the main stage area, people sat in the chairs provided or along the edge of the central fountain, enjoying cajun specialty meats, tasty baked pastry treats, grilled greek foods, fresh lemonade, and other treats as they listened to the guitar stylings of Dominic Gaudious, the unique "delta bluegrass" sound of Delta Reign, and piano master Bobby Van Deusen. A number of other acts of various types are scheduled over the weekend, with two additional stages for performances on Saturday and Sunday.

Over the weekend (Saturday and Sunday) the Children's area will also be open with lots of fun hands-on crafts for kids including string painting, sand art, fish prints, clay sculpting, origami, and much more. Face painting and balloon artists add to the fun, as well as a special stage in the children's area featuring groups of children and teens from area schools and studios as well as cultural performers.

Over 200 artists will be displaying their works, competing for $25,000 in prizes over a variety of categories including mixed media, photography, ceramics, glass/jewelry, watercolors, drawing, fiber/wood/leather, sculpture, and more. The festival consistently ranks among the top fine art and fine craft shows.

Heritage arts is another must-see area at this festival. Craftspeople and artisans from around the country demonstrate skills such as blacksmithing, spinning, weaving, woodcarving, engraving, basket-making, and many more. And for a locals hint ... stop in one of the stores along the street for a cool drink much cheaper than those at the festival, sit down and relax at a game of checkers, browse the bit of Americana available, and enjoy a clean, spacious, well-appointed restroom visit without the lines at the less-than-desirable port-o-let option in the main festival area.

If you miss the festival this year, make plans to attend next year. The Greater Gulf Coast Arts Festival is a yearly event held early in November each year. See you there!

Denmark's history is long and rich, and the capital, Copenhagen, still boasts many cobblestone-paved streets amid buildings reminiscent of medieval days. Surrounded by canals and bodies of water, the picturesque city was founded in 1167 and retains it's charming atmosphere with old-world architecture. Clean air is the result of many cycle commuters, and Copenhagen and the surrounding countryside is a great destination for cyclists and backpackers. Within the city itself lies the world-famous Tivoli Gardens, magical with it's myriad twinkling lights, and packed with thrilling amusement rides. The area was home to Hans Christian Anderson, who penned a number of fairy tales including The Little Mermaid; today you can visit the mermaid's statue in Langelinie. If you plan to visit Copenhagen, don't miss these must-see attractions within the city: Christiansborg Slot (Castle), NY Carlsberg Glyptotek, Ordrupgaard, and Rosenborg Slot (Castle). We like to periodically take a peek at what other travel bloggers are writing, and sometimes share the gems. We found a great travel blog at RealTravel which is exactly that ... contributions from real travelers on every destination, so you get to read firsthand what others had to say about each destination and their experiences there.

It was interesting to read about Annie King's experience in Antarctica, where she actually swam in the Antarctic Ocean, as well as enjoyed the hot water springs near the shore of the south polar continent with snow covering the ground.

We also enjoyed reading about Angus' and Karen's adventures in Japan, and learning about the culture there and participating in local festivals and traditions. Japan is very close to our hearts, and we love to hear other people's impressions and listen as they tell about what they enjoy about Japan.

Always look for extras offered in hotel pricing that make the price more of a bargain than it may at first appear, such as free parking, the ability to prepare at least some of your own meals or keep drinks cold, free meals, and children staying free. Last-minute online deals through a room broker can often save a lot of money over offers made directly with hotels, and offer a wide variety of accommodations. Also look for local savings cards that can often be purchased, allowing the holder to visit many local attractions for free, and sometimes with extra perks such as head-of-line privileges and additional discounts.

When searching for cheap hotels, it pays to search for discounts online, as you can often find quotes far below what you would receive from dealing directly with hotels. You also have the advantage of easily comparing all of the amenities offered by various hotels, and selecting the accommodations that best suit your needs and preferred level of comfort, as well as your budget.

Also consider searching available London apartments if it better suits your needs. Costs are generally higher, but the convenience of a fully appointed kitchen may offset the price if you prefer to cook some of your own meals. The best we found on the day we compared rates was the Citadines South Kensington Apart'Hotel London, which has quite a good reputation with travelers for being clean and tastefully decorated, having well appointed facilities, employing helpful staff, offering convenience of location, and for overall value.

At the other end of the spectrum are hostels, which generally are sparsely furnished and without many amenities, but offer a camaraderie among travelers and a flavor all their own at much lower prices. If you prefer a hostel, there are several to chose from. However, we were pleasantly surprised to find better hotels offered at a lower price than was available from hostels, so those would probably be a better choice for most travelers. The Custom House Hotel London is a 3-star accommodation that offers more amenities than the typical London hotel starting at a modest GBP 40. And for overall best value savings, we found the Ifor Evans Hall London, which while only being rated a 1-star hotel, has garner the praise of past visitors and offers excellent value at only GBP 22.

While searching for hotels in the UK, be sure to check the last-minute deals as well as special year round prices. While researching for our post, the entries changed and the 4-star in London became available for GBP 7 less than the hotel we had planned to review. Prices change frequently, so when you find a great price at a hotel that meets your needs, be sure to book during the specials offered before the rooms are all taken.

Romantic hotel getaways are the subject in "Top 10 Romance Hotels in the World." Everyone needs a little romance sometimes, or at least a place to seek out seclusion and tranquility and enjoy luxurious surroundings. The top 10 list gives you a variety of destinations to launch your dreams ... (Speaking of launching, perhaps one day the ultimate romantic getaway will be in space, check out "Space hotel readying in 5 years")

We have to agree with the poster's choice of the Four Seasons Hotel George V Hotel in Paris as a number-1 romantic getaway. With sumptuously elegant rooms, courtyard and gardens, and its proximity to the Louvre and Champs-Elysees, this Paris hotel is an excellent choice!

We were likewise impressed with the second choice, the Westin Europa & Regina Venice in Italy. It's location on the Grand Canal and view of the Santa Maria della Salute church earn it top marks for romance, and the nearby Fenice Opera House and renowned shopping center promise other activities.

However, it is our personal prejudice that might make us choose Le Meridien Hotel Grand Pacific in Tokyo as our own favorite. Tokyo isn't often thought of as the most romantic of cities, but the gardens of the Imperial Palace, the Kabuki theaters, Ueno park (which includes museums and a zoo), beautiful shrines guarded by Tori gates, the lovely gardens of Hama Rikyu, and the exciting nightlife and shopping in Ginza make
one of our most favorite destinations for any kind of travel.

However you would rate these three hotels as well as the other seven, it's worth a look just to explore the romance of these hotels and their surrounding cities.

Traveling to (and in!) South Africa

When visiting South Africa, many tourists choose to travel by road. A few key points to remember are that a driver's license must be in possession at all times, and driving is on the left side of the road. Seatbelts for both driver and passenger are mandatory by law, and using a hand-held cell phone is not permitted. You may use a phone attachment or hands-free kit. Drinking and driving is a very serious offense, and especially to be avoided.

Driving in cities is much like driving in a city anywhere in the world ... understand that congestion may occur, especially in rush hours of 6:30 - 8:30 am and 4 - 6 pm. Watch especially for the minibus taxi drivers, whose reputation for unexpected maneuvers is deserved, but be prepared and do not get involved in confrontations. Driving in the rural areas has its own considerations. Many areas do not have fencing, so expect dogs, cows, chickens, and other animals to be on or near roadways and drive carefully. In certain areas, wildlife can pose a special problem. Watch for signs warning of leaping antelope and be especially careful, particularly nearing dusk.

For hotel accommodations in South Africa, be sure to check for last minute deals as well as year round discounts available at Cheaperthanhotels to book rooms at prices that are usually discounted from those offered directly by the hotels. Travel the world - New Zealand!

New Zealand is one of our favorite choices for world travel. This unspoiled paradise has it all. Breathtakingly beautiful scenery, truly wild places, glaciers, gardens, ocean views. Sports from skiing to surfing, fishing, hiking, hunting, golfing, bungee jumping, and mountain biking. Themed attractions include Cowboy Paradise, Rainbow's End (rides), Longridge Fun Park, and many others. Zoos, Antarctic Encounter, and wildlife parks. Cultural and educational events from museums to mines to sheep farms to the Maori culture. New Zealand is really a fantastic family or couple's destination. Remember that, as a Southern Hemisphere location, New Zealand's summer season is from December to March, allowing you to get away from the dreary ice and slush and alight in a warmer clime for a delicious getaway!

To find great deals on a variety of accommodation types, search for hotels at your destination. The three big cities on the North and South Island of New Zealand are Aukland, Wellington, and Christchurch. For hotels in Aukland, we especially liked the entry on the Mercure Hotel Windsor Aukland. With rooms up to a 5-star rating, it is a great value from 159 NZD and offers gymnasium, jacuzzi, sauna, spa, onsite restaurant and room service, and many other amenities. We checked hotels in Wellington and were really impressed with the Duxton Hotel Wellington. In our last post, we offered information for travel and accommodations in Spain. We would like to also give information for those traveling in Germany (or those lucky enough to be traveling in both Spain AND Germany!).

Vienna is a popular tourist spot in Germany. Over 100 museums draw millions of visitors per year. One may also see the Lipizzaner horses or the Vienna Boys' Choir, or visit the world's oldest zoo.

Vacationing in Spain

Does your trip itinerary include Spanish destinations? When traveling in Spain, consider flying between Barcelona and Madrid in order to maximize your vacation schedule. Flights are usually a little over an hour long, compared to travel by train which usually takes from five and half up to nine hours.

World Cuisine

In our last post, we talked about our monthly homeschool get-togethers dedicated to a country or region, during which we enjoyed food, entertainment, and more from the selected destination. A great source for finding recipes from around the world (or around the corner) is a chefs site.

You can usually search by nation or region, and choose recipes suited to your needs. For example, at Chefs.com there are over 1,300 regional recipes, searchable by 53 countries, regions, or continents, and also arranged by prep time. You can view the prep time and separate cooking time for each one, as well as recipe rating to help make selection easier. Some of my favorite cuisines are Asian, and I am looking forward to trying the yakitori, as the recipe is a bit different from my own. I'm sure you will find favorites of your own here as well.

Enjoying the food of the selected country is a great way to pull everything together for your meeting, and combining it with visual effects, music, and other elements is a great way to make for an immersion learning experience that is fun as well as memorable. A lot more informative (and will be remembered MUCH longer!) than a dry lesson from a geography textbook.

Bringing the world home to you!

We used to belong to a homeschool group that taught us a great way to experience travel without having to pack, arrange for pet and houseplant care, pay for hotels and airfare, etc. Without leaving home for more than an evening, we had the opportunity to experience a new place through our own eyes as well as through the experiences of others, taste exotic foods, learn local customs, and more.

Every month our group selected a country to "visit" and each family chose a dish of that country to prepare. We studied the local culture and the area, and each prepared something for our presentation. Some families would dress everyone in local costumes and present a skit, some would volunteer their homes and transform a part of it into the country we were visiting, some would collect photographs and make a travel scrapbook, some would do a report or re-enactment of some historically significant event, some would learn a bit of the language and teach it to everyone else on the evening we all met together to experience our "country of the month." Each family (or even each child) could choose what most interested them about the featured country and spend a month researching, preparing, and enjoying their project while at the same time learning about the selected country and usually learning some life skills in the process. At the end of the month we all got to enjoy watching our children's performances and enjoy a variety of local cuisine, all served in an atmosphere that drew us deep into the local culture.

Sometimes I think our little "trips" let us experience more of the selected country than even a real visit would have done, and certainly we learned more in the process, and spent less money!
Even if you don't homeschool, maybe you know a group of families from school, church, or a social organization who would be interested in trying out a project like this. It's a great way to have fun, meet people, and travel the world!

We can't go EVERYwhere ourselves, so one of our favorite ways to travel is to read an interesting travel blog. We found a great blog with entries for dozens of countries, so you can can experience the world from your own desk anytime of the day or night. Other categories are also offered allowing you to quickly find travel entries that match your interests, whether they be wildlife and safari, cruises, road trips, or family travel.

Photos of breathtaking scenery, colorful local flavor, exotic animals, and more greet you on every blog entry and draw you into the experience of the traveler who submitted it, along with their travel entries and personal descriptions of their visit. You never know what you will find around the next corner, just like when traveling for real!

When you can't get away yourself, take time out and take a mini-vacation by viewing a great travel blog. You'll have a great time, and save money on hotels and airfare at the same time!

Skiing in summer?

It's July and some of us are feeling roasted in the summer heat, and dreaming of winter snows again. Browsing ski brochures? Chicken - the festival AND the recipes!

We've just started raising chickens here at home (which will present its own set of travel challenges), so it was with great interest that I discovered the Chicken Festival in London, Kentucky, home of the first location of the famous Colonel Sander's Kentucky Fried Chicken. The festival is coming up September 27-30th. Live entertainment will be provided, along with rides, kid's activities, a themed parade, crafts, games, and a recipe contest. If you want to start practicing a variety of chicken recipes in order to get a feel for your own creation, the time is now!

Speaking of food and travel, one of the great things about traveling is sampling different kinds of food. I love the "flavors" of different places, and often find something I'd like to take home and add to my own collection. Asian recipes are some of my favorites, and I love chicken stir-fry. Another favorite is Indian food (I love saffron!) and my next recipe-to-try is saffron chicken with dried apricots. (Don't miss the story that goes along with it on this website!)

Which brings me to my next point. If you love travel, but can't afford to actually go there, look for ideas in an upcoming post about bringing exotic destinations home to you!

My first thought of travel to Amsterdam is .... well ... that it's not a FAMILY sort of destination. You probably know what I mean. But, in fact, the city of Amsterdam has more to offer than its typical reputation would suggest.

As a family we read "The Diary of Anne Frank" and it was one of the most powerful stories of the many we shared, and it sparked a lot of discussion on many different levels. While I have not been able to take my family to visit it, The Anne Frank House is open for visitors as a museum, and is much the same as it was during the time Anne and her family and the others remained hidden there. Visitors step through the bookcase which hid the access and ascend the stairs into the secret annex to view some of the memoribilia from the time spent in hiding. Visitors to the Anne Frank House should also visit the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam as well.

Other cultural gems grace the city of Amsterdam as well. Famed the world over, the Dutch master painter Rembrandt lived in Amsterdam. The Rembrandt House Museum is open to visitors and boasts a collection of his work. And while not the original (which may be found in London), another location of Madame Tussaud Wax Museum may be found in Amsterdam. We are a homeschooling family, and love to visit historic sites in order to enjoy our family vacation and make history come alive for the kids at the same time. A wonderful US city for family adventure is Jersey City.
